The hyouga is the glacier — a mass of compacted ice that moves slowly down a mountain slope. Although Japan has no truly alpine glaciers, their imagery has circulated for decades through travel literature, particularly the accounts of Japan’s early-twentieth-century polar expeditions. The Katana Hyouga transfers this quality of frozen mass into a replica of austere character.
The T10 steel blade (60–62 HRC, nagasa approximately 27.5 in.) is finished with a deep mirror polish that returns a glacial blue at the passage of light. The surface carries the impassive stillness of an ice block under direct illumination.
The fittings adopt an arctic palette: steel-gray ito over very light samegawa, a patinated silver tsuba with an ice-crack motif (branching lines), a white lacquered saya with very pale blue reflections, and glacial-gray sageo. Matte silver habaki.
A fitting piece for admirers of polar documentaries and Nordic design, a decorative accent for rooms with a monochromatic northern palette, and a thoughtful gift for those who have read the accounts of Shirase Nobu, Japan’s Antarctic explorer of 1910. A katana that brings the silence of the poles indoors.

Time-honored craft. Masterful gesture. A one-of-a-kind, hand-forged piece built to last.
The blade takes shape beneath the hammer. Each layer of steel is folded and re-welded under heat to create a core that is both strong and flexible.
The steel is brought to high temperature, then quenched rapidly: this fast cooling hardens the edge and reveals the hamon, the wavy line that runs along the blade.
The smith hand-polishes the blade with natural stones of increasing grit, revealing its luster, its edge, and the soul of the steel.
Each blade is crafted by master artisans according to traditional forging techniques.
