A zanpakutō is, above all, an extension of its shinigami’s soul. That of Tōshirō Hitsugaya, captain of the Tenth Division of the Gotei 13, is the oldest ice dragon in Soul Society. Here are its four defining visual elements:
The ito: Glacial teal cotton, wound in crossed layers — the color of ice newly formed on high-altitude lakes. The tsuba: Octagonal and gilded, finely engraved. Its eight-sided form echoes the hexagram of Mizu (Water) in the Five Elements of Chinese cosmogony, the esoteric foundation of Bleach. The saya: Pure lacquered ebony, without ornament — the restraint befitting a Gotei 13 captain. The sageo: A bright green ribbon hanging from the pommel, recalling the chain that, once released, evokes the shikai form.
Blade in 1060 carbon steel (56–58 HRC), hand-forged. Bankai: Daiguren Hyōrinmaru.

Time-honored craft. Masterful gesture. A one-of-a-kind, hand-forged piece built to last.
The blade takes shape beneath the hammer. Each layer of steel is folded and re-welded under heat to create a core that is both strong and flexible.
The steel is brought to high temperature, then quenched rapidly: this fast cooling hardens the edge and reveals the hamon, the wavy line that runs along the blade.
The smith hand-polishes the blade with natural stones of increasing grit, revealing its luster, its edge, and the soul of the steel.
Each blade is crafted by master artisans according to traditional forging techniques.
