The story behind the blade

Identity: Mitsuri Kanroji. Age: 19. Role: Love Pillar (Koi no Hashira). Physical distinction: muscular strength eight times above normal, pink-green hair, mandatory high-calorie diet.

Weapon identity: a nichirin flexible as a whip (unique among the Hashira), capable of bending mid-strike. Aesthetics: tsuka wrapped in teal ito over white samegawa with interwoven red and black rings, golden flower-shaped tsuba with pink and green petals, white saya traced with red zigzag motifs echoing the character’s hair. Blade engraved with red kanji evoking Love Breathing, derived from Flame Breathing.

The blade takes shape beneath the hammer. Each layer of steel is folded and re-welded under heat to create a core that is both strong and flexible.

Tempering

The steel is brought to high temperature, then quenched rapidly: this fast cooling hardens the edge and reveals the hamon, the wavy line that runs along the blade.

Polishing

The smith hand-polishes the blade with natural stones of increasing grit, revealing its luster, its edge, and the soul of the steel.

How to care for your blade

After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.

Is this sword sharpened?

Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
