The story behind the blade

“I am nothing like the other Hashira.” Giyu repeats it often, always in the same flat voice. Tomioka is the Water Pillar: silent, detached, a survivor of trauma he has never processed. His eleventh form, Nagi (Dead Calm), can deflect any attack — the same stillness he wishes he could find within himself.

The replica of his nichirin follows the character’s palette: brilliant scarlet scabbard, contrasting with the blue of the scale-patterned haori gifted to him by Sabito. White ito over samegawa with a subtle red motif. Red hexagonal tsuba with clean geometric engraving. The 1060 steel blade (56–58 HRC) carries golden kanji for Water Breathing Forms, from the First through the Tenth, plus the secret Eleventh.

Forging

The blade takes shape beneath the hammer. Each layer of steel is folded and re-welded under heat to create a core that is both strong and flexible.

Tempering

The steel is brought to high temperature, then quenched rapidly: this fast cooling hardens the edge and reveals the hamon, the wavy line that runs along the blade.

Polishing

The smith hand-polishes the blade with natural stones of increasing grit, revealing its luster, its edge, and the soul of the steel.

How to care for your blade

After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.

Is this sword sharpened?

Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
