The story behind the blade
In Japanese, Maizuru means “dancing crane” — an image that evokes elegance, symmetry, and aerial movement. The Wakizashi Maizuru carries this name because its Damascus steel blade displays patterns reminiscent of the ruffled feathers of the sacred bird in Japanese culture.
Damascus steel, produced through the layering of hundreds of metal strata, reveals a fluid, undulating design in the light: each blade is unique because no pattern ever repeats exactly. A nagasa of approximately 20 inches and hardness around 58–60 HRC offer a balance between aesthetics and performance.
The handle is finely detailed: cream-colored cotton ito over genuine ray-skin samegawa, traditional bamboo mekugi, copper-alloy tsuba chased with a feather motif. The saya is lacquered in ivory tones with a coordinated sageo — a direct reference to the white plumage of the tancho, the great red-crowned crane.
A distinctive piece for collectors who favor wakizashi with strong symbolic identity, a complement to a Damascus steel katana for a coordinated daisho, a decoration for floral or Eastern-themed spaces, or a gift for sword arts practitioners with a refined aesthetic sensibility. A blade that tells the story of the silent flight of the crane over the fields of Hokkaido.
