The story behind the blade

Kanoya, in Kagoshima Prefecture, has long been tied to the martial tradition of Kyushu — the land of southern samurai, hard temperament, and some of Japan’s oldest forges. The Wakizashi Kanoya evokes this southern school, where restraint took precedence over ornament.

The 1060 carbon steel blade carries the classic contained sori curvature typical of the wakizashi, a nagasa of approximately 20 inches, and a geometry that prioritizes rigidity over decorative slenderness. It is designed for serious practice, not ceremony. Hand-sharpened, 58–60 HRC hardness, center balance.

Everything else is consistent with that functional intent: tightly wrapped black ito on the tsuka over dark samegawa, iron tsuba with simple piercing, matte lacquered wooden scabbard with no maki-e or engraving. A matte horn koiguchi and raw bamboo mekugi complete a mounting entirely free of affectation.

A piece for those who appreciate the austere aesthetic of battle swords over ceremonial decoration, a gift for enthusiasts of Kyushu martial schools (Jigen-ryu, Yakumaru-ryu), a warrior-style katana complement, or a display piece for private studies where restraint is a virtue. A wakizashi that does not ask to be admired — only held.

Frequently asked questions

How to care for your blade
After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.
Is this sword sharpened?
Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
What are the shipping times?
Ships within 7 business days for in-stock items. If the item is on preorder, the expected date is shown at the top of the page.
Can I return my order?
Yes, you have 30 days from delivery to return it.
Is it legal to own a sword?
Yes — owning a sword in your home is perfectly legal in the United States, whether for collection, decoration, historical reenactment, or sport practice (HEMA). Carrying it in public is restricted by state and local laws: a sword is considered a bladed weapon, and transporting it outside your home without a legitimate reason (event, training, transport to a club) may be subject to local regulations. Our pieces ship in a scabbard and protective packaging suitable for initial transport from our warehouse to your home.
Is payment secure?
Yes, completely. Our store is protected by an SSL certificate (https://) that encrypts all communications between your browser and our site. Payments are processed directly by Stripe and PayPal — we never have access to your card details (card number, CVV, expiration date). Your information is shared only between you and the payment processor, never through our servers.
