The story behind the blade

The great helm, or “helm of the great,” was typically worn over a lighter cap such as a cervelliere. Widespread throughout central Europe during the Middle Ages, this helmet type is documented in numerous illuminations, miniatures, and archaeological finds from Germany, Flanders, England, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. First appearing during the Crusades (late 12th / early 13th century), it remained in use through the 14th century among mounted knights.

This replica is crafted from 1.6 mm 16-gauge carbon steel and features a brass cross appliqué on the front. All parts of the helmet are firmly secured with steel rivets. The vision slits measure approximately 15 cm in length by 1.3 cm in width. Multiple openings at the lower rim ensure good ventilation.

The interior is blackened and fitted with adjustable riveted leather padding. The brown leather chin strap (approximately 2 mm thick) fastens with an antique-finish brass buckle.

How to care for your blade

After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.

Is this sword sharpened?

Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
