The story behind the blade

The Ferrum Imperatoris Gladius — “Iron of the Emperor” — is a faithful replica of the standard gladius carried by Roman legionaries from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD. Available in the Mainz or Pompeianus variant depending on the period: short double-edged blade (50–60 cm), sharp thrusting tip, wooden or bone grip guard.

The weapon with which Rome conquered the Mediterranean world. A philologically grounded replica suited to reenactors of Caesar’s, Augustus’s, and Trajan’s legions. An essential Roman sword for cosplayers of legionaries and centurions, reenactors at events such as Aquileia or Vindolanda, and decorators of ancient Rome-themed studies. Pairs naturally with scutum, lorica segmentata, and galea.

How to care for your blade

After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.

Is this sword sharpened?

Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
