The story behind the blade

“Rieke” is a diminutive of Friederike, a common name in northern German villages throughout the medieval period. Women’s shoes in the north were typically lower-cut and narrower than men’s, shaped to suit the active, measured stride of women in everyday life.

Black leather upper with a reinforced leather sole, simple front lacing, and a low ankle-cut silhouette. Comfortable for extended walking, including on the uneven terrain of outdoor medieval fairs.

Well suited to female characters of the late Middle Ages – commoners, religious women, merchants – as well as Hanseatic reconstructions and realist-style LARP events. Pairs naturally with skirts, dresses, trousers, and tunics alike.

How to care for your blade

After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.

Is this sword sharpened?

Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
