The story behind the blade

Shinobu Kocho always smiles. Even when she kills. Especially when she kills. The Insect Pillar is the only Hashira who cannot sever a demon’s head — she is too small, too slight — so she invented another way: injecting wisteria poison through an elongated, tapered blade, thin as a needle, deadly as a mosquito.

The replica preserves every detail of her nichirin: a long, narrow blade (slimmer than other uchigatana), tsuba in the shape of a stylized red-and-green butterfly (the chōchō, symbol of the Kocho family), dark green ito braided over samegawa, black saya with a red butterfly motif. The blade carries red kanji for Insect Breathing. 1060 steel (56–58 HRC). The “smiling sister” is ready to inject her poison.

Forging

The blade takes shape beneath the hammer. Each layer of steel is folded and re-welded under heat to create a core that is both strong and flexible.

Tempering

The steel is brought to high temperature, then quenched rapidly: this fast cooling hardens the edge and reveals the hamon, the wavy line that runs along the blade.

Polishing

The smith hand-polishes the blade with natural stones of increasing grit, revealing its luster, its edge, and the soul of the steel.

How to care for your blade

After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.

Is this sword sharpened?

Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
