The story behind the blade

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold: rather than concealing the fracture, it is highlighted in a golden vein, recognizing the object’s history as part of its beauty. It is one of the most widely cited Japanese aesthetic concepts in contemporary discussions of perfection and fragility. The Katana Kintsugi carries that philosophy into a decorative replica.

The 1060 carbon steel blade (nagasa approximately 70 cm, hardness 58–60 HRC) has a traditional polish, but the true focal point is the saya: its finish simulates the kintsugi pattern, with golden veins crossing a black ground like fractures repaired with precious metal. A permanent decorative treatment.

The ito wrapping the tsuka is dense black over samegawa, in deliberate contrast with the gold of the saya. A dark-alloy tsuba with a chiseled fracture motif (itself an echo of the concept), a black sageo with a gold thread. Habaki in burnished gold that closes the composition.

A conceptually rich replica, chosen by collectors familiar with wabi-sabi philosophy, contemporary minimalist interior designers, readers of Leonard Koren (Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers), or enthusiasts of traditional ceramics. The katana carries a lesson within it: what has been broken can become more beautiful.

Every blade, three stages

Time-honored craft. Masterful gesture. A one-of-a-kind, hand-forged piece built to last.

01

Forging

The blade takes shape beneath the hammer. Each layer of steel is folded and re-welded under heat to create a core that is both strong and flexible.

02

Tempering

The steel is brought to high temperature, then quenched rapidly: this fast cooling hardens the edge and reveals the hamon, the wavy line that runs along the blade.

03

Polishing

The smith hand-polishes the blade with natural stones of increasing grit, revealing its luster, its edge, and the soul of the steel.

Frequently asked questions

How to care for your blade
After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.
Is this sword sharpened?
Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
What are the shipping times?
Ships within 7 business days for in-stock items. If the item is on preorder, the expected date is shown at the top of the page.
Can I return my order?
Yes, you have 30 days from delivery to return it.
Is it legal to own a sword?
Yes — owning a sword in your home is perfectly legal in the United States, whether for collection, decoration, historical reenactment, or sport practice (HEMA). Carrying it in public is restricted by state and local laws: a sword is considered a bladed weapon, and transporting it outside your home without a legitimate reason (event, training, transport to a club) may be subject to local regulations. Our pieces ship in a scabbard and protective packaging suitable for initial transport from our warehouse to your home.
Is payment secure?
Yes, completely. Our store is protected by an SSL certificate (https://) that encrypts all communications between your browser and our site. Payments are processed directly by Stripe and PayPal — we never have access to your card details (card number, CVV, expiration date). Your information is shared only between you and the payment processor, never through our servers.
