The story behind the blade
The Gladius Pompeianus, the “Pompeii Sword,” is the Roman gladius variant recognized from blades excavated in the volcanic city during 1st-century A.D. archaeological digs. Short double-edged blade with a sharp tip, wood or bone crossguard, spherical pommel. It was the standard weapon of Roman legionaries at the height of the Empire.
A philologically grounded replica based on museum models. This Roman sword is essential for reenactors portraying legionaries, centurions, and gladiators of the 1st–2nd century, for cosplayers of characters from Gladiator (Maximus Decimus Meridius), and for collectors decorating Roman or Pompeian-themed interiors. It pairs beautifully with a lorica segmentata or a centurion’s helmet to recreate the complete legionary kit.

How to care for your blade
After every use, wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Carbon steel reacts to humidity and the natural acids on your skin: a light coat of mineral oil (Ballistol or camellia oil) applied once or twice a month protects against corrosion for the long term. For extended storage, keep the sword outside its scabbard, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If a rust spot appears, gently buff it with a very fine stone and oil it immediately. A well-cared-for blade lasts through generations.
Is this sword sharpened?
Our carbon steel blades (1045, 1060, T10, Damascus) all ship sharpened by our partner smiths. Stainless steel blades (420, 440), made for collection and display, are not sharpened.
